The New Jersey Spartans need your help to feed the hungry this year. During the months of February and March, we will be collecting non-perishable food items around the state to benefit the Community Food Bank in Hillside. The Spartans will also host a food drive at their home game on March 24th. The statistics on hunger in this state show we need donations now more than ever.

According to a report from the New Jersey Department of Human Services, the number of residents receiving food stamps is on the rise. As of December 2011, the number of participants in the program has increased by 20 percent in the past year and doubled over the past four years.  More than 800,000 people in the state are currently using food stamps as a means to feed their family.

According to the 2010 Map the Meal Study from Feeding America, more than 1 million people in New Jersey could not afford to eat meals on a regular basis in 2009.  Of this group, nearly half did not qualify for federal nutrition assistance.

The holidays may be over, but the need for giving is still present in our community. “Hunger is an ongoing situation,” says Spartan General Manager Charmaine Moss. “Many people collect food around Thanksgiving, but what happens to the hungry families in December, January and so on?”
