Spartans Weekend Scrimmage Recap

Belleville, NJ – The New Jersey Spartans minor league football team held its only scrimmage of the summer with the South Jersey Cerberus from Burlington, NJ on Saturday afternoon at Belleville Municipal Stadium.

The scrimmage lasted roughly 45 plays and was just under two hours on a sunny day with temperatures in the high 90s.

“The scrimmage was better than I anticipated,” Spartans head coach Kevin Moss said Saturday. “The energy and tempo of the offense is something we need to work on a lot. We were a little careless at times in terms of communication, but as we already know, there are a lot of new guys on the Offense.”

First year quarterback Rashad Hector commanded the offense and completed majority of his passes, one touchdown and zero interceptions on the day. He found new receiver Kevin Brown on a scoring strike of 40 yards and connected with other new receivers Alex Monks and Jiam Diaz for a few catches.

Will Woodley and Shaquil Murphy led the rushing attack with a combine 40 yards on 8 carries while QB Rashad Hector added 51 yards on three carries of his own.

“The whole goal of a scrimmage is to get the right guys on the ball, get them going in the right direction and get them to execute properly.” Moss said. “I want to test our players character, attitude and competitive spirit, players that can be responsible and accountable to do their jobs. We are a young team and have a long way to go, but we’ve made a lot of progress as a team today.”

On the defensive side of the ball safety James Wright led the way with five tackles, one tackle for loss.  Eddie Porter and Nick Napurano both made a few stops with Napurano recording a sack. While returning starter defensive back Delcancy Dotson Jr. added an interception.

“I was pleased with the defense,” Moss said. “They made some interceptions and big plays. We made some big plays on offense as well.”

“We have a few days left. We will obviously evaluate this film and see where the starters will fall. Hopefully, the choices we make as a coaching staff will be the right combination that can propel us to victory one week from today.”

The Spartans return to the practice field on Monday in preparation for the first game of the summer NEFL season on Saturday.
