Opening Day Shelling

OLD BRIDGE – Opening Day was just another day at work for the road graders paving the way for the New Jersey Lions in their 35-0 shutout of the New Jersey Spartans in RAFL action.
With running lanes the width of the Jersey Turnpike, Lion ball carriers racked up 157 yards by land and quarterback Matt Mariano tossed three touchdown passes in the romp.
To some, the performance was nothing out of the ordinary as they front five for the Lions mauled their way through the preseason.
“Our offensive line, were doing exactly what we had hoped they would do,” Head Coach Paul Castillo Jr. said. “We practiced against it (the defensive fronts) we watched a lot of film. They (the offensive line) came out and did it, and performed as well as we had hoped. We had a great week of practice. It is a great front five we have right here with Mikey Meehan being the sixth guy at tight end. They did exactly what they did at practice. They had a hell of a week and it just carried over this weekend.”
On the other side of the ball, the Lions’ defense was equally impressive. Although they forced no turnovers, the pressure applied from different angles corrupted any blocking schemes the Spartans attempted.
Blitzing with different members of the secondary the Lions sacked Spartan quarterbacks five times, limiting the Spartans to 50 yards of total offense. In typical coach fashion, Coach Castillo still found a flaw in the Lions’ performance.
“Penalties, penalties added a little bit to killing us in the first half, inside the red zone two or three times, luckily we were able to convert and score on those drives. The penalties in the first half are something that definitely needs to be addressed because later on in the season, in a tight game, that may be the deciding factor,” Castillo said.
