Excitement in Elizabeth
The Spartans wrapped up this year’s toy drive with a successful delivery at the St. Joseph Social Service Center in Elizabeth last Thursday. Coach Kevin Moss, Director of Player Personnel David Ginorio and Coach Cavel Walker came to represent the team as it handed out presents to the children of Elizabeth.
Coach Moss stirred up the crowd of nearly one hundred children and their parents waiting for their chance to get a toy. “I was happy that we could be a help to a community that was clearly in need,” he says.
Collecting toys right up until the last few hours, the team delivered more than 200 gifts this season. “It feels real good,” says Margaret, a long time volunteer at St. Joseph, “because we know the kids need it. A lot of people are homeless around here.”
“It means a lot to the children and parents that people care,” says Sister Edie, a coordinator at St. Joseph. “When we first told them that New Jersey Spartans were coming, they were psyched about that.”
According to its website, the social service center offers a wide range of programs including food and clothing distribution, housing assistance, job readiness, counseling and therapy. The non-profit relies on donations to provide these services. If you are interested in offering your support, please visit the website or call (908) 352-2989.
Celebrating a toy drive that exceeded initial expectations, Coach Moss is already setting higher goals for next year’s event.
“Today was definitely a blessing,” says Moss. “In the future, instead of us trying to bring in two hundred toys, we’re going to shoot for five hundred. I can’t wait until next year.”
